Fraud Alerts
Set fraud alerts! A fraud alert is a notation placed in your file with the credit reporting agencies that states suspicious activity has been discovered in your credit file, and alerts creditors that they need to contact you and verify your identity before extending credit to anyone claiming to be you.
- You may place a fraud alert in your file by notifying just one of the three nationwide consumer credit reporting companies. That agency will notify the others to do the same.
- Parents can set a fraud alert for children under 18 by mailing a written request to each credit bureau due to federal law restrictions.
- You’ll receive confirmation in the mail once your alert is activated.
- Fraud alerts prevent instant credit approvals. Inform loan officers if you’re buying a home or car.
- To remove an alert, write to each bureau with your full identity details via certified mail.
- Contact numbers: TransUnion (800) 680-7289, Experian (888) 397-3742, Equifax (800) 525-6285.
